Web content accessibility aims, on the basis of recommendations, to create more accessible web content for a greater number of people, allowing web content to be usable by any type of user.
Designing and developing accessible web content demonstrates social responsibility, fulfilling a citizen’s right to participation and non-discrimination — rights that have a legal basis in Spain and that regulate web accessibility rights:
- Law 34/2002, of 11 July, on information society services and electronic commerce. Its fifth additional provision: Accessibility for people with disabilities and the elderly to information provided by electronic means.
- Royal Legislative Decree 1/2013, of 29 November, approving the Consolidated Text of the General Law on the rights of persons with disabilities and their social inclusion. Its Article 5: Scope of application regarding equal opportunities, non-discrimination and universal accessibility, including specific measures to guarantee these in the following areas: a) Telecommunications and the information society.
- Royal Decree 1494/2007, of 12 November, approving the Regulation on the basic conditions for access by people with disabilities to technologies, products and services related to the information society and social media.
According to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, web accessibility is considered one of the fundamental human rights.
The main limitations regarding access to content are visual, motor, auditory, cognitive and linguistic. These limitations include those related to age, and one may also take into account limitations arising from the internet connection itself.
Accessibility therefore refers to the tools that allow people with disabilities and limitations to use and access the web. jdpeople.es has designed and created this website following the principles established in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
The accessibility of our website is based on these four key principles:
- Perceivable: All users must be able to perceive the information and user interface components.
- Operable: Regardless of the device users employ to access the website — computers, tablets, mobile devices, etc. — the user interface components and navigation must be operable.
- Understandable: All users must be able to understand the information and the user interface.
- Robust: Both users and the various user agents, including assistive technologies of the different browsers or applications external to the website, must be able to read and understand the website content.
To comply with these four principles we have followed these guidelines:
- Providing text alternatives for images, and allowing the user to adjust text width and line width to sizes that maximise readability.
- Ensuring sufficient contrast between text and background, while trying to respect the corporate colours.
- Audio and video content includes transcriptions, subtitles or sign language.
- Animated GIFs, flashing animations and other content that may cause seizures and physical reactions have been avoided.
- Links do not open content in a new window.
- Users can access buttons and menu items (as well as drop-down menus) using the keyboard and the mouse.
- Multimedia elements such as video, audio, carousels or sliders do not play automatically without user interaction.
- Links aim to be descriptive at all times and to make sense without context.
On the basis of all these circumstances, jdpeople.es is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the largest possible number of users, regardless of circumstances and ability. Our goal is to comply as closely as possible with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0, Level AA), published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Jdpeople.es strives to comply with accessibility guidelines and standards; it is not always possible to do so in all areas, and we are currently working to achieve this. Please note that due to the dynamic nature of the website, minor issues may arise as it is updated regularly. We are continually seeking solutions to bring all areas of the site to the same level of overall web accessibility.
