Key Differences between Certified Organic Oils and Natural Oils

In the beauty, food, and aroma industry, looking for green products is no longer just a fad, but a common reality easy to find everywhere. Even so, there is still confusion between “natural essential oil” and “organic essential oil”, which are often used as synonyms when, according to the norms, they are different.

For those who buy ingredients in bulk, understanding this difference is key, not only to ensure the highest quality for the final product, but also to comply with labeling rules and not fall into greenwashing. At Just Different People, we offer both, being transparent so our customers can choose based on their needs.

What Does a “Natural” Oil Really Mean?

An essential or vegetable oil is said to be natural when it only comes from plants. To produce it, the oil is taken from seeds, flowers, leaves, or roots by using extraction methods, such as cold-pressing or steam distillation. At Just Different People, we believe that a good natural oil should not have any additives except for what the plant produces.

Nonetheless, it is important to take into account that not every natural oil is also organic. A 100% natural product may have been grown with pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

The Added Value of “Certified Organic” Oil (BIO/Organic)

Fundamentally the difference is in the certification and traceability. An organic oil  is it naturally obtained and comes from organic farming, a production system regulated by strict standards (such as those of the CAERM in our region).

For an oil to be organic, it must meet the following requirements:

  1. Cultivation without synthetic chemicals: no pesticides neither chemical fertilizers.
  2. Non-GMO: guarantee that no genetically modified organisms have been used.
  3. Audited traceability: each batch can be traced from the growing field to the final container we deliver to the customer.
  4. Sustainable processes: the extraction must be sustainable to care for the environment.
